| TARRAGONA |
| In 2000, UNESCO named the collection of Roman archaeological remains in Tarragona a World Heritage Site.
It is also one of the seven wonders of Catalonia.
|
| The archaeological remains in Tarragona are truly unique, and visitors to the city can enjoy the many monuments housed within the city. Some of these are described below…
|
| Roman Amphitheatre: |
| This oval-shaped building, which is very close to the sea, dates from
the 2nd century A.D. It could hold 14,000 spectators and it was here that the legendary fights between gladiators and wild beasts were held, as well as public executions.
|
|
| City Walls: |
| No Roman city would be complete without the ramparts which protected the city
from possible attacks and raids. The walls are best visited by going for a gentle stroll along the 1300 meters which are preserved.
|
|
| Tarragona Municipal Museum of History: |
| This is housed in the Torre de Pilatos (Pilatos Tower), from which you can reach the Roman Circus |
|
| Tarragona National Archaeological Museum: |
| Those who love archaeology should not miss the opportunity to visit this museum. |
|
| Theatre: |
| This is the only Roman theatre in the whole of Catalonia, although it not very well preserved. |

| THE EBRO DELTA |
| The Ebro Delta, covering an area of 320 km², is the second most important wetland area of the western Mediterranean, after the French Camargue. It includes
a wide variety of natural habitats which are not common in the rest of Catalonia: large salt water lakes such as la Tancada, or freshwater lakes such as l'Encanyissada, mile after
mile of beaches with sand dunes, for example Punta del Fangar, salt marshes like the ones at la Tancada and Punta de la Banya, fresh water springs such as los Ullals, the shallow
bays of el Fangar and Els Alfacs, riverside woodlands and river islands. These, in addition to the man-made ecosystems of rice fields and salt pans, make up a unique landscape of
great natural wealth and beauty.
|
| This diversity of ecosystems, flora and fauna has led to a significant area of the Ebro Delta being protected, by being declared a Natural Park in 1983.
It is a haven for birdwatchers as more than 300 species of birds can be seen there, some resident and others migratory, spending the summer or winter here or simply passing through.
This is the only habitat in the whole of Catalonia where certain species can be found, amongst these the Great white egret, the Glossy ibis, the Great bittern, the Squacco heron and
the flamingo, as well as being home to tens of thousands of ducks and wading birds. The Delta is also home to many rare native plants, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.
|
| The Natural Park has excellent facilities for tourists and for students and researchers: an eco-museum to aid understanding of the natural and agricultural
environments of the Delta, various information centres, a library and a biological research station for scientists complete with a centre for the rehabilitation of wild animals.
|
| As well as the great ecological value of the area, which is a paradise for bird watchers and all nature lovers, there are also many beautiful unspoiled
beaches. The Delta also represents the fight by man to colonise a hard and difficult landscape, with its rice fields which change colour from one season to the next, making up an
endless landscape between tiny villages and houses. It is well worth taking a boat trip out into the mouth of the river.

| CUISINE |
| The local cuisine of this area is typical of the Mediterranean diet, combining all sorts of vegetables, meat, fish and seafood, and with
dishes full of contrasts and subtleties of flavour.
|
| In Catalan cuisine, and especially on the coast, you must try some of the rice and fish dishes which are best enjoyed along with one of our
excellent wines from the area. Another important element of regional cuisine is olive oil – and don’t forget to try one of our most delicious and typical specialities,
pà amb tomàquet (Catalan bruschetta with olive oil and tomato).
|
| Some traditional desserts are the famous crema catalana (Catalan cream), menjar blanc, an almond milk pudding from Reus, and mel i mató,
a cheese and honey dessert which comes in many varieties, and will satisfy even the sweetest tooth!
